OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/05/2024, Irvine Police responded to a residence in the 100 block of Whistling Swan after a Honda Odyssey crashed into the home. Officers found 38-year-old John Alexander Bash III, who used a wheelchair because of a spinal cord injury, dead inside the residence from multiple stab wounds. Investigators identified 47-year-old Aaron Matthew Shindle, a former caregiver for Bash, as the suspected attacker. Officers searched the surrounding neighborhood and located Shindle about an hour later near Stonecreek South and West Yale Loop. According to police, Shindle was armed with a knife. Officers repeatedly ordered him to drop the knife, but he instead raised it and advanced toward an officer. An Irvine police officer fired, striking Shindle. Officers rendered medical aid until paramedics arrived, but Shindle died at a hospital. A knife was recovered at the scene. The Orange County District Attorney's Office and the Irvine Police Department investigated the shooting. Irvine Police later released body-worn camera, drone video, surveillance footage, and the 911 call from the victim's caregiver showing the events before and after the shooting. Publicly available records have not identified the officer who fired the fatal shots.
