OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/04/2024, Hardin County Sheriff's Office deputies located 33-year-old Jonathan Schutte of Ardmore, Alabama, in the parking lot of a business in the 4700 block of Highway 128 South after receiving information that he was wanted in connection with an armed robbery in Limestone County, Alabama. Deputies approached Schutte's vehicle in an attempt to take him into custody. According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, Schutte exited the vehicle and fired a handgun at the deputies. Deputies returned fire, striking Schutte. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No deputies were injured. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was requested to investigate the shooting at the request of 24th Judicial District Attorney General Matt Stowe. Hardin County Sheriff Johnny Alexander later stated Schutte had been considered armed and dangerous and that deputies had attempted to arrest him without incident before the exchange of gunfire occurred. Publicly available records have not identified the deputy who fired the fatal shots or announced criminal charges or disciplinary action against the deputy.
