OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/04/2024, at approximately 9:23 p.m., a Campbell County Sheriff's deputy responded to a reported domestic violence incident in the 1100 block of Lawver Road near Wright. A 54-year-old woman called 911 and reported that her husband, 55-year-old Christopher Baeza Morales, had punched her in the face and that she was attempting to leave the residence. As the deputy arrived, Morales fired a shotgun through the windshield of the deputy's patrol vehicle from a concealed position, striking the driver's side of the windshield. The deputy exited the patrol vehicle and returned fire, striking Morales. Emergency medical personnel pronounced Morales dead at the scene. The deputy was not injured. Sheriff Scott Matheny described the shooting as an ambush and said the deputy "came so close to dying" after the shotgun blast struck the patrol vehicle. The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for the investigation, and the deputy was placed on paid administrative leave pending completion of the investigation. Publicly available records have not identified the deputy who fired the fatal shots or announced criminal charges or disciplinary action arising from the shooting.
