On 11/17/2024, Weber County Sheriff's deputies responded to Haven Pointe Apartments at 2265 S. 1100 West in West Haven after neighbors reported a domestic disturbance between 30-year-old James Kudelka and his girlfriend. Callers reported hearing the woman repeatedly tell Kudelka to leave and hearing him refuse. Kudelka also used a skateboard to smash the windshield of his girlfriend's vehicle. Deputies arrived and attempted to communicate with Kudelka, who had barricaded himself inside the apartment with his girlfriend. After hearing a disturbance inside and becoming concerned for the woman's safety, deputies forced entry. According to investigators, Kudelka charged at the deputies while armed with a large kitchen knife. One deputy deployed a Taser, but it was ineffective. Kudelka retreated briefly, then again advanced toward deputies with the knife. Three deputies fired their weapons, striking Kudelka. He was pronounced dead at the scene. His girlfriend was removed from the apartment without injury. The Weber County Attorney's Force Investigation Team conducted the investigation and later concluded the deputies' use of deadly force was legally justified. The deputies' identities have not been publicly released.
