On 08/02/2024, Lake County Sheriff's deputies responded to a disturbance near Brookside Drive after Julie Sulpizio reported neighbors and requested a welfare check at her residence. Deputies discovered signs of a forced entry and entered the home while announcing their presence. As deputies moved through the residence, investigators said Michael Sulpizio was waiting with a rifle and opened fire in an ambush, fatally wounding Master Deputy Bradley Link and injuring two other deputies. During the ensuing standoff, additional gunfire was exchanged between occupants of the residence and law enforcement. After SWAT officers entered the home several hours later, Michael Sulpizio was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was transported to a hospital, where he died. Investigators also found more than 20 firearms, ammunition, body armor, gas masks, and anti-government materials inside the residence. Julie Sulpizio was later charged with first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer and other offenses for allegedly orchestrating the ambush.
