OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/03/2024 at approximately 9:34 p.m., San Bernardino County sheriff's deputies responded to a report of a man carrying a handgun outside the Vons shopping center at 8778 19th Street in Rancho Cucamonga. Witnesses directed deputies toward a nearby Walgreens, where they encountered 31-year-old Angeleno Davonte Sykes.
Police attempted to contact Sykes, who was armed with a handgun. During the initial encounter, gunfire was exchanged between Sykes and deputies in the parking lot outside the Walgreens. Sykes then continued on foot across the shopping center toward the Sprouts Farmers Market on Carnelian Street while still armed. Deputies pursued him into the shopping center, where a second exchange of gunfire occurred.
Sykes was struck by police gunfire during the second exchange inside or immediately adjacent to the Sprouts market. Paramedics transported him to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
One deputy sustained a superficial gunshot wound during the encounter. The deputy received medical treatment and was released from the hospital the same evening.
Investigators later stated they believed Sykes had been involved in a separate shooting in the City of Upland roughly one hour before the Rancho Cucamonga encounter. Detectives investigated both incidents to determine whether they were connected.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff's Specialized Investigations Division – Homicide Detail assumed responsibility for the investigation. Because the death resulted from police gunfire, the investigation also fell under California's post-AB 1506 review process, requiring an independent review by the California Department of Justice to determine whether criminal charges against the involved deputies were warranted.
As of the latest publicly available information, the names of the deputies who fired their weapons had not been publicly released. I found no record of deputies being criminally charged or disciplined in connection with the shooting, and no publicly reported civil wrongful-death lawsuit or settlement involving Sykes' estate had been located through available court records or news reporting.
