OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/02/2024, Clarksdale police officers responded to a reported traffic crash in the area of McGuire Cove near Ritchie Avenue. When officers arrived, they encountered 26-year-old Ladarius Walls near the crash scene.
During the encounter, gunfire was exchanged between Walls and two Clarksdale police supervisors. Lieutenant Terry Tyler was struck by gunfire during the exchange, suffering a gunshot wound to his shoulder. Tyler returned fire along with Captain Vincent Ramirez. Police gunfire struck Walls, who died at the scene. Tyler was transported to a Memphis hospital, where he underwent treatment for his injuries.
The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation assumed responsibility for the shooting investigation. Agents processed the scene, interviewed witnesses and submitted their findings to the Mississippi Attorney General's Office for an independent legal review.
Several days later, Clarksdale officials identified the wounded officer as Lt. Terry Tyler. City officials also announced they would request assistance from federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, ATF and U.S. Marshals Service, following a series of shootings affecting the city. Those requests were part of a broader public safety initiative and were not limited to this individual incident.
On 03/27/2026, the Mississippi Attorney General's Office announced it had completed its review of the shooting. After reviewing the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation's findings, the Attorney General concluded that the use of deadly force by Lt. Terry Tyler and Capt. Vincent Ramirez was legally justified under Mississippi law and declined to bring criminal charges against either officer.
