On September 12, 2024, at approximately 6:30 a.m., Broomfield Police Department officers responded to reports of gunfire and a disturbance at the Arista Flats apartment complex in Broomfield, Colorado. Upon arrival, officers identified Gregory Ryan Miles inside a unit, where he was reportedly holding 32-year-old Aisha Yvonne Quest hostage. Miles fired multiple shots at officers, neighboring apartments, and vehicles in the parking lot, prompting police to issue a shelter-in-place order for nearby residents.

Officers attempted to negotiate with Miles, but the situation escalated, and police forcibly entered the apartment after nearly four hours. During the confrontation, officers fired at Miles, seriously wounding him. He was taken into custody and transported to a hospital. Inside the apartment, officers found Quest with a gunshot wound. Medical personnel transported her to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The 17th Judicial District Attorney's Office later charged Miles with first-degree murder, multiple counts of attempted first-degree murder, and additional charges related to the use of a weapon.
