On 05/08/2022, 28-year-old Shanice Renee Dantzler-Williams was killed when Charleston County Sheriff's Deputy Emily Nicole Pelletier drove through a stop sign and struck the vehicle Dantzler-Williams was driving at the intersection of New Road and U.S. Highway 17 near Ravenel. Dantzler-Williams' mother, Stephanie Dantzler, 53, and sister, Miranda Renasia Dantzler-Williams, 22, were also killed. The sheriff's incident report documents Shanice as a 28-year-old Black woman.

Pelletier was responding to assist another deputy with a disabled motorist, a non-emergency call. She did not have her emergency lights or siren activated. Investigators determined that Pelletier was traveling approximately 81 mph seconds before the collision and about 73 mph when she entered the intersection, where the speed limit on New Road was 45 mph. Dantzler-Williams was traveling approximately 53 mph on Highway 17, below its 60-mph speed limit.

Pelletier disregarded the stop sign and struck Dantzler-Williams' vehicle, sending it into a wooded area where it struck roadside objects and trees. All three women were killed.

Pelletier was fired by the Charleston County Sheriff's Office for policy violations and charged with three counts of reckless homicide. On April 21, 2025, a jury convicted her on all three counts. She was sentenced on each count to five years, suspended to three years in prison followed by two years of probation, with the sentences running concurrently.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
Emily Nicole Pelletier was 24 and employed as a Charleston County Sheriff's Office deputy at the time of the crash. Following the investigation, the sheriff's office terminated her employment on June 10, 2022, for policy violations related to the fatal collision. She was subsequently prosecuted and convicted of three counts of reckless homicide for the deaths of Shanice Dantzler-Williams, Stephanie Dantzler and Miranda Dantzler-Williams.
