On 05/08/2022, 53-year-old Stephanie Dantzler was killed when Charleston County Sheriff's Deputy Emily Pelletier ran a stop sign on New Road and struck the car carrying Dantzler and her two daughters on U.S. Highway 17.

Pelletier was responding to a non-emergency report of a disabled vehicle. She was traveling approximately 73 mph and did not have her emergency lights or siren activated when she drove through the stop sign and crossed Highway 17. The collision killed Dantzler and her daughters, Shanice Dantzler-Williams, 28, and Miranda Dantzler-Williams, 22.

Pelletier was fired by the sheriff's office and charged with three counts of reckless homicide. She was later convicted in connection with the crash.
