OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
Jayland Walker, a 25-year-old Black man, was shot and killed by Akron police after a late-night traffic stop turned into a high-speed chase and foot pursuit. Police claimed Walker fired one shot from his vehicle during the chase. After he exited the car unarmed and fled on foot, eight officers fired approximately 94 rounds at him within 7 seconds, striking him 46 times. He died at the scene. A handgun was found later in his vehicle. Bodycam footage revealed Walker was running away when shot. The officers claimed they feared he was turning to shoot. A grand jury declined to indict any officers, and an internal review later cleared them. All officers returned to duty by October 2023. The city settled with Walker’s family for $4.8 million in 2024. The killing triggered protests nationwide due to the extreme number of shots fired, the lack of charges, and the continued shielding of officer identities. Community activists cite systemic bias, excessive force, and a failure of accountability. Federal authorities have not pursued civil rights charges.
