OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On April 15, 2025, Dallas County Sheriff's deputies conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 80 near Earlham for a vehicle speeding. During the stop, the driver, 51-year-old Vonderrick Rayford of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, exited the vehicle and opened fire on a deputy. Additional law enforcement agencies, including Stuart Police and the Iowa State Patrol, responded to the scene. Rayford fired on officers again, and they returned fire, resulting in his death. Investigations revealed that Rayford was wanted on an outstanding warrant in Wisconsin, was driving a vehicle stolen from Colorado, and possessed a stolen firearm. The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is reviewing the incident.
