OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On May 15, 2023, a Richmond deputy attempted to traffic-stop a vehicle on U.S. 220 but the vehicle refused to stop and sped away. The deputy stayed behind the vehicle and backed off and turned his emergency equipment off. Police allege that he had stopped the pursuit and given up. The driver of the vehicle turned the 4-way flashers on and began slowing down. The deputy followed behind at a distance to see what the issue was but was allegedly not chasing. The abandoned the vehicle and fled on foot.Other deputies and officers with the Rockingham PDswarmed the area and used a K-9 from Rockingham PD and soon saw a man on Walnut Ln. The man began running and police allege that he produced a gun. Police allege that the man then turned the gun on himself and committed suicide under police duress.
