OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/30/2022, deputies with the Pasco County Sheriff's Office responded to a report of a suspicious vehicle parked outside a business at 11810 U.S. Highway 19 in Port Richey. When deputies attempted a traffic stop, the vehicle pulled into a nearby parking lot.
According to investigators, the driver exited the vehicle and struggled with one deputy while a passenger fought with another. During the encounter, the driver re-entered the vehicle and attempted to continue driving away while a deputy remained at the driver's door. Sheriff's officials stated that the deputy was dragged approximately 150 feet before firing his weapon at the driver.
The driver was struck by gunfire and died at the scene. Authorities stated that he was unarmed at the time of the shooting. The passenger was taken into custody. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigated the shooting.
