The bodycam video shows a very different scenario. Police had entered his home and chased him into the basement. White ran and was torn to the ground by an aggressive attacking police K9 dog. Police allege that he lacerated the dog with a knife but an attack on the dog or police is not seen on the video. Instead, White is pulled down and continually bitten by an excited barking Belgian Malinois dog while its handler opens fire on White on the ground, shooting and killing him. We are unable to identify any danger to the officer or dog as both are seen as being the aggressors on this video. The video is linked below

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigated the shooting. In October 2022, the Olmsted County Attorney concluded that Officer Michael Bottcher Jr.'s use of deadly force was legally justified under Minnesota law and declined to file criminal charges.

Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Gunshot

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/29/2022, officers with the South Bend Police Department responded to a mental health crisis at a residence in the 1200 block of North Sheridan Street after receiving reports that Dante Kittrell was suicidal and had access to a firearm.
Officers spent several minutes attempting to negotiate with Kittrell before the encounter turned fatal. According to police, Kittrell pointed what they believed to be a handgun at officers, who then opened fire. Kittrell was struck multiple times and died at the scene.
Investigators later determined that the object Kittrell was holding was not a firearm but a black lighter designed to resemble a handgun. Body-worn camera footage released after the shooting captured officers attempting to negotiate with Kittrell before the shots were fired.
The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's Office concluded that the officers' use of deadly force was legally justified because they reasonably believed Kittrell posed an imminent threat, despite the object ultimately being determined to be a lighter.
Kittrell's death prompted vigils and protests in South Bend. Black clergy, community leaders, and family members questioned the police response to a mental health crisis, called for greater transparency and accountability, and urged the city to expand alternatives to armed police responses for people experiencing mental health emergencies.

Investigators alleged that David Pelaez-Chavez broke into a home, stole a vehicle, abandoned it, and continued on foot through vineyards and nearby properties.
More than ten deputies, assisted by a helicopter and K-9 units, searched for Pelaez-Chavez before locating him in a creek approximately one mile from the 5600 block of Thomas Road. Body-worn camera footage from multiple deputies was later released, showing the lengthy pursuit and the final confrontation.
Pelaez-Chavez's family disputed the necessity of deadly force, arguing that deputies outnumbered him and questioning why less-lethal tactics were not used. The case also prompted members of Sonoma County's law enforcement oversight panel to renew calls for independent state investigations of fatal police shootings.

Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Suicide under police duress
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/25/2022, Auburn Police Department officers responded to a report of shots fired at a residence on the 800 block of Griswold Court. As officers arrived, they observed a vehicle leaving the area and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle continued driving away, prompting a pursuit involving Auburn police, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, and the Indiana State Police. During the pursuit, officers deployed stop sticks on County Road 51 near State Road 8, successfully deflating the vehicle's tires. Despite the damaged tires, the vehicle continued northbound at a slow speed. As it approached the area of County Road 51 and County Road 40, officers reported hearing gunshots coming from inside the vehicle.
When the vehicle came to a stop, officers approached and found Edward James Conboy, 37, in the rear seat with a fatal gunshot wound and Heather Lynn Harmon, 35, in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound. Officers attempted lifesaving measures on Harmon, but both were pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators determined that no law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the pursuit.
The Indiana State Police investigation determined that the incident began when Conboy, who had previously been in a relationship with Harmon, forced his way into her vehicle at gunpoint outside the Griswold Court residence. During the struggle, he fired shots, prompting the original 911 call. Detectives concluded that Harmon continued driving during the pursuit because she was acting under Conboy's coercion. At the end of the pursuit, Conboy fatally shot Harmon before taking his own life. Authorities classified the incident as a domestic violence-related murder-suicide. No officers were identified because none discharged their weapons.

State : Pennsylvania
Agency : Monogahela PD
Officer(s) : Not Disclosed
Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during “Shots fired” call
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, Monongahela Police Department officers responded to the 1000 block of Lincoln Street after multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire and an attempted homicide. According to the Pennsylvania State Police investigation, Cody Bennett had been attending a child's birthday party on nearby Thomas Street. Witnesses told investigators Bennett, who appeared intoxicated, was asked to leave after making several women and teenage girls uncomfortable. Bennett went to his nearby home, retrieved a handgun, returned to the residence, fired shots into the air, and then fired two rounds through the rear door of the occupied home. The bullets narrowly missed people inside, including children. Bennett then walked away before officers arrived.
A Monongahela police officer located Bennett on Lincoln Street a short time later. According to investigators, Bennett fired at least one shot that struck the officer's patrol vehicle. The officer drove out of the line of fire, turned around, and resumed searching for Bennett. Officers then encountered Bennett near Lincoln and Thomas Streets and repeatedly ordered him to drop his handgun. District Attorney Jason Walsh later stated that Bennett ignored those commands and instead pointed the firearm toward an elderly woman who was outside nearby. The officer fired a single shot, striking Bennett. He was transported to Penn Highlands Mon Valley Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:13 p.m.
The Pennsylvania State Police conducted the investigation. On 10/07/2022, Washington County District Attorney Jason Walsh announced that the shooting was a justifiable homicide, concluding that the officer reasonably believed deadly force was necessary to stop an immediate threat to both the officer and others. The officer's identity was not released publicly and remains undisclosed. Bennett's blood alcohol concentration was reported to be 0.218. Bennett's family criticized the decision, saying they were not notified before the public announcement and arguing that the situation could have been resolved without deadly force. No criminal charges were filed against the officer, and he returned to duty. I found no publicly reported civil lawsuit arising from the shooting.

Cause of Death : Suicide
Event : Suicide under police duress
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/23/2022, shortly before 2:00 p.m., Lamar Police Department officers responded to the Lamar Apartments in the 700 block of Mullen Street after reports of multiple people being shot. Officers found Roy Bock, 50, and Loretta Rhoades, 58, dead at the scene from gunshot wounds. An 18-year-old woman, Keisha Graeff, had also been shot and was transported to a Denver-area hospital in critical condition. Investigators later identified 24-year-old Jourden White as the shooter. White and the victims were all inside the apartment when the shooting occurred and were known to one another, although investigators never publicly explained the nature of their relationship or a motive for the attack. Graeff later died from her injuries on 07/29/2022.
After the shooting, White left the apartment complex in a vehicle. Lamar police issued a BOLO, and a Granada Police Department officer spotted the vehicle a short time later. A pursuit followed through eastern Prowers County involving the Granada Police Department, Prowers County Sheriff's Office, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Parks and Wildlife, and, after the pursuit crossed toward the Kansas border, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office from Kansas. Officers deployed stop sticks in an attempt to disable the vehicle, but White continued driving before eventually stopping in a field near Holly, Colorado.
After stopping, White exited the vehicle carrying a handgun and fatally shot himself. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation stated that no law enforcement officers fired any shots during the incident. The Lamar Police Department and CBI conducted the homicide investigation, while the pursuit concluded without police using deadly force. I found no later criminal proceedings, civil litigation, or additional investigative findings beyond the public identification of the victims and confirmation that Keisha Graeff later died from her injuries.

Location : 2000 block of Kay Road
City : Benton
County : Saline
State : Arkansas
Agency : Benton PD
Officer(s) : Brian Franklin
Cause of Death : Unknown
Event : Killed by police chase crash
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, a Benton Police Department officer attempted to stop William Delbert Whitfield near the intersection of Cox Street and Edison Avenue. Whitfield continued driving away while Officer Brian Franklin pursued him through Benton. The pursuit traveled along Highway 35, Bennett Road, and ended in the 2000 block of Kay Road. After Whitfield's vehicle came to a stop, an encounter occurred during which Officer Brian Franklin fired his weapon. Initial emergency radio traffic indicated Whitfield had been shot in the chest, but Benton police never confirmed where he was struck or whether he had also suffered injuries in the crash.
Whitfield was pronounced dead shortly after the encounter. Benton Police repeatedly stated only that he "succumbed to injuries sustained in the encounter" without identifying the medical cause of death. Officer Brian Franklin was not injured and was placed on paid administrative leave while the department conducted an internal investigation and the case was reviewed by the Saline County Prosecuting Attorney. Benton Police did not publicly release additional facts describing what occurred after the pursuit ended, including what prompted Officer Franklin to fire, whether Whitfield was armed, or the precise sequence of events immediately before the shooting. No publicly available investigative findings, autopsy report, or prosecutorial determination clarifying the cause of Whitfield's death could be located.
Research note: Despite extensive follow-up searching, there is no publicly available evidence resolving whether William Whitfield died from injuries sustained in the vehicle crash, from the gunshot wound, or from a combination of injuries. Because authorities have never publicly clarified the medical cause of death, "Cause of Death : Unknown" remains the most accurate classification based on available records.

Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during “Shots fired” call
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Bristol Bay Apartments at 4709 Bristol Bay Way after receiving reports of shots fired. According to investigators, an altercation between two men at a party over a woman had escalated outside the apartment complex, where Jonathan Huertas Reyes allegedly fired multiple shots at the other man. No one was struck by the gunfire. Deputies located Huertas Reyes a short time later and attempted to speak with him, but he continued walking away and a brief foot pursuit followed.
During the pursuit, one deputy drew a Taser in an effort to gain compliance. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, Huertas Reyes then removed a handgun from the fanny pack he was wearing and pointed it at his own head while making repeated statements that he might as well kill himself because he was going to jail. Bystanders began shouting to him in both English and Spanish to put the gun down. A bilingual deputy contacted Huertas Reyes by telephone while standing at a distance and spent several minutes attempting to persuade him to surrender peacefully. During the conversation, Huertas Reyes placed the handgun on the ground but refused repeated commands to walk toward deputies. He then picked the handgun back up. Deputies stated they fired after he raised the weapon in their direction, believing he posed an immediate threat to them and nearby residents.
Deputies immediately rendered medical aid, including CPR and use of an automated external defibrillator, before Huertas Reyes was transported to Tampa General Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted the independent investigation. Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister identified the deputies who fired as Sergeant Benjamin Kenney, Deputy Nicholas Scudder, and Deputy Jeff Louis. The Sheriff's Office released body-worn camera footage the day after the shooting. I found no publicly reported criminal charges against the deputies, no civil lawsuit filed by Huertas Reyes' family, and no indication that the identities of the deputies changed after the initial release.

City : Portland
County : Multnomah
State : Oregon
Agency : Portland Police Bureau
Officer(s) : Mina Cavalli-Singer
Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during arrest
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, shortly after midnight, Portland Police Bureau officers responded to the area of Southeast 148th Avenue and Southeast Clinton Street after multiple callers reported a man and woman physically fighting. Officers located 19-year-old Johnathan A. Worth and attempted to arrest him. During the struggle, Worth resisted being taken into custody and several officers wrestled with him on the ground. According to investigators, Worth produced a handgun during the struggle and fired one shot. No officers or bystanders were struck. Officer Mina Cavalli-Singer then fired six rounds, striking Worth. Officers immediately rendered emergency medical aid, but Worth was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Portland Police Bureau identified Officer Mina Cavalli-Singer, a nearly five-year veteran of the bureau, as the officer who fired the fatal shots. The incident was investigated by the East County Major Crimes Team and reviewed by the Multnomah County District Attorney's Office. On 12/12/2022, a Multnomah County grand jury returned a not true bill, concluding that Officer Cavalli-Singer's use of deadly force was not criminal under Oregon law. The District Attorney later obtained a court order releasing the grand jury transcripts, which were made public in April 2023.
The Portland Police Bureau also conducted an internal administrative review through its Police Review Board. I found no publicly reported wrongful death lawsuit filed by Worth's family and no indication that Officer Cavalli-Singer was disciplined in connection with the shooting. The officer's identity, the grand jury's decision, and the investigative records remain publicly available through the Portland Police Bureau and Multnomah County District Attorney.

Matthew Neal Mitchell
Age :22
Gender :Male

Date : 07/24/2022
Location : 5000 S Grove Street
City : Englewood
County : Arapahoe
State : Colorado
Agency : Englewood Police Department
Officer(s) : Aaron Jarrett, Trey Sammon, Dirk Smith, Adam Wright
Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during mental health crisis
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, Englewood Police Department officers responded to a home in the 5000 block of South Grove Street after Matthew Neal Mitchell's mother called 911 requesting help for her 22-year-old son, who was intoxicated, suicidal, and had access to multiple firearms. According to investigators, Mitchell had threatened to kill himself and had recently been involved in a domestic disturbance with family members. Officers attempted to communicate with Mitchell from outside the home for more than an hour while crisis negotiators and additional resources responded. During the standoff, Mitchell remained inside the residence with his 27-year-old brother, Phillip Blankenship.
According to the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, Mitchell eventually fired a shot from inside the residence toward officers outside. Four Englewood officers—Aaron Jarrett, Trey Sammon, Dirk Smith, and Adam Wright—returned fire, discharging dozens of rounds into the home. After the shooting stopped, officers entered the residence and found Mitchell dead from gunshot wounds. They also found Phillip Blankenship critically wounded. Blankenship, who was unarmed, had been struck by police gunfire and was transported to a hospital, where he later died. Investigators concluded that Blankenship was unintentionally struck by officers' bullets during the exchange of gunfire.
The 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, led by the Colorado Bureau of Investigation, investigated the shooting. Body-worn camera footage and other video were publicly released in August 2022. In January 2023, the 18th Judicial District Attorney concluded that the officers' use of deadly force against Mitchell was legally justified under Colorado law because investigators determined he had fired at officers. The District Attorney also concluded that the officers were criminally justified despite the death of Blankenship, finding that his death resulted from officers lawfully responding to the perceived deadly threat posed by Mitchell.
In July 2024, Phillip Blankenship's family filed a federal wrongful death and civil rights lawsuit against the City of Englewood and the officers involved, alleging the officers used excessive and reckless force by firing into the residence while knowing an uninvolved person remained inside. The lawsuit seeks damages for Blankenship's death and challenges the tactics used during the standoff. I found no lawsuit filed on behalf of Matthew Mitchell's estate.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, Sevier County Sheriff's Office deputies attempted to stop 32-year-old Zachary Tyler Gorman, who was riding a motorcycle. Authorities have never publicly disclosed why deputies initiated the attempted traffic stop or what prompted the pursuit. Gorman continued riding away while deputies pursued him northbound on Veterans Boulevard toward McCarter Road.
As the pursuit approached the intersection of Veterans Boulevard and McCarter Road, Gorman rode through a red traffic signal and collided with a Honda Odyssey that was making a left turn onto Veterans Boulevard. The impact threw Gorman from the motorcycle, and he slid underneath another vehicle. He died at the scene from injuries sustained in the crash. No other motorists were seriously injured. The Tennessee Highway Patrol investigated the collision. Authorities did not report that any officers discharged their weapons or made physical contact with the motorcycle before the crash.
Despite the fatal outcome, the Sevier County Sheriff's Office never publicly explained the reason for initiating the pursuit or released additional information regarding the events leading up to it. I found no publicly reported internal review, lawsuit, disciplinary action, or subsequent investigative report providing further details about the chase or identifying the deputies involved. Gorman's obituary states that he was a resident of Strawberry Plains, the father of two daughters, Harper Gorman and Greer Griph, and a member of Mt. Harmony Baptist Church.

Cause of Death : Gunshot
Event : Killed by police during investigation
OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, Clark County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the Harmony Estates Mobile Home Park in the 1100 block of Ashwood Drive after receiving reports of a breaking and entering, gunfire, and a possible hostage situation. Deputies attempting to contact the occupants of the trailer were met with gunfire. During the initial exchange, Deputy Matthew Yates was shot and killed. Another member of the Sheriff's Office Special Operations Team suffered an injury to an extremity during the incident and was later released from the hospital.
The shooting developed into an hours-long standoff involving the Clark County Sheriff's Office Special Operations Team and numerous assisting agencies. Authorities repeatedly attempted to negotiate with the occupants while surrounding the trailer. Additional gunfire was exchanged during the standoff, and the trailer eventually caught fire. After the fire was extinguished, investigators entered the residence and found Cole White, 27, and Jodie Arbuckle, 47, dead inside from gunshot wounds. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation assumed responsibility for investigating both the death of Deputy Yates and the police shooting. Authorities have not publicly identified which officers fired their weapons or released a detailed account of the gunfire that resulted in White's death.
Records released after the incident showed that White's family had contacted law enforcement two days earlier requesting a welfare check because they were deeply concerned about his mental health. White was also the subject of an outstanding warrant in Greene County after failing to appear in court on felony firearm charges. White's brother told reporters that White had struggled with mental illness, describing episodes of paranoia and hallucinations in the months leading up to the shooting. Despite the extensive investigation, I found no public release identifying the deputies who fired, no detailed final investigative narrative explaining White's death, and no publicly reported civil lawsuit filed by White's family.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, at approximately 4:35 p.m., an Arkansas State Police trooper attempted to stop 19-year-old John Bomar after observing a traffic violation as Bomar exited eastbound Interstate 40 at Forrest City onto northbound Arkansas Highway 1. Authorities stated that Bomar continued driving away and accelerated to speeds exceeding 100 mph while the trooper pursued him. Publicly available records do not identify the specific traffic violation that initiated the stop.
Near the St. Francis–Cross County line, an Arkansas State Police trooper used a Precision Immobilization Technique (PIT) maneuver to stop Bomar's vehicle. The maneuver caused the vehicle to leave the roadway and enter a farm field, where it came to rest after crashing. Bomar, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was removed from the wreckage as troopers and other responding officers provided lifesaving measures before he was transported by ambulance to CrossRidge Community Hospital in Wynne. He later died from his injuries. Arkansas State Police announced that the incident would undergo both an internal investigation and review by the prosecuting attorney to determine whether the trooper's use of deadly force complied with Arkansas law.
I found no public release identifying the trooper who performed the PIT maneuver. I also found no publicly available prosecutorial findings, internal review results, body-camera or dash-camera release, or civil lawsuit filed by Bomar's family related to the incident. The case received little follow-up coverage after the initial investigation was announced, and no additional official details explaining the outcome of the review appear to have been made public.

OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/24/2022, at approximately 1:25 a.m., Bloomington Police Department officers observed Jordan Trajan Cason driving an SUV through two red traffic signals on Market Street. Police reported that Cason then collided with a vehicle that was stopped at the intersection of Market and Lee Streets before continuing to drive away without stopping. Officers attempted to initiate a traffic stop, but Cason continued driving while police pursued him through Bloomington. The pursuit was terminated by supervisors at the intersection of Oak and Mulberry Streets because of public safety concerns.
Within moments of ending the pursuit, officers received reports of a vehicle on fire near the intersection of Locust Street and White Oak Road. Responding officers found Cason's SUV engulfed in flames after it had left the roadway and crashed into a tree. Cason, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, died at the scene from multiple blunt-force injuries. The McLean County Coroner identified him following an autopsy, and toxicology testing was performed as part of the investigation. Authorities stated there was no police vehicle contact with Cason's SUV before the crash.
Bloomington Police conducted a crash reconstruction investigation in conjunction with its Criminal Investigation Division and the McLean County Coroner's Office. The delay in publicly releasing Cason's identity was attributed to a communication error between the police department and the coroner's office after his family had already been notified. I found no publicly reported internal investigation finding, civil lawsuit, or later investigative report identifying the officers involved or criticizing the pursuit. The pursuit had already been discontinued before Cason's vehicle crashed.
