OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/27/2022, deputies with the Hancock County Sheriff's Office responded to a report that Brianna Marie Grier was experiencing a mental health crisis. Deputies handcuffed Grier and placed her in the rear of a patrol vehicle for transport.
As the patrol vehicle drove away, Grier fell from the moving vehicle after the rear passenger door had not been properly secured. Because she was handcuffed behind her back, she was unable to break her fall and struck her head on the pavement, suffering multiple skull fractures and severe traumatic brain injuries.
Grier remained hospitalized for four days before dying from her injuries on 07/31/2022. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent investigation.
Body camera video released by the GBI showed deputies realizing the rear door was open after Grier had fallen from the vehicle. The incident prompted widespread public outrage and renewed scrutiny of police transport procedures involving people in mental health crises.
Civil rights attorney Ben Crump represented Grier's family. The family filed a federal wrongful death lawsuit alleging deputies acted with deliberate indifference and failed to follow basic safety procedures. In 2024, Hancock County agreed to a $4 million settlement with Grier's family.
