OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/27/2022, officers with the Portland Police Bureau responded to reports of a man firing a gun in the area of 125 SE 126th Avenue. Witnesses reported hearing dozens of gunshots, and officers arriving at the scene located Aaron Douglas Stanton.
According to investigators, Stanton remained armed during the encounter. Police stated that he ignored commands to drop his weapon and pointed a handgun toward officers, prompting Officer Joshua Dyk to fire his weapon. Stanton was struck by gunfire and died at the scene.
The Portland Police Bureau's Enhanced Community Safety Team secured the scene, and the East County Major Crimes Team conducted the independent investigation. The Multnomah County District Attorney presented the case to a grand jury, which determined that Officer Joshua Dyk's use of deadly force was legally justified.
