OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/27/2022, officers with the Los Angeles Police Department responded to a traffic collision near Broadway and Avenue 18 after witnesses reported that one of the drivers had walked away from the crash carrying what appeared to be a handgun.
Officers located Marcos Maldonado a short distance from the collision. According to the LAPD, officers ordered him to stop and show his hands. Police stated that Maldonado turned toward the officers and raised what they believed to be a handgun, prompting Officers David Gallardo and Alonso Vazquez to fire their weapons.
Maldonado was struck by gunfire and pronounced dead at the scene. Investigators later determined that the object he was carrying was an Airsoft-style replica handgun rather than a functioning firearm.
The Los Angeles Police Department's Force Investigation Division investigated the shooting, and the incident was also reviewed by the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office and the LAPD Board of Police Commissioners under the department's standard officer-involved shooting review process.
