On 07/26/2022, officers with the Montgomery Police Department were searching for a wanted person when they observed two men standing beside a Nissan Altima outside the Express Inn East hotel. Police believed they had witnessed a drug transaction and attempted to stop the vehicle after the two men got inside.
The driver continued driving away while officers pursued. According to police, speeds reached approximately 90 to 100 mph before supervisors ordered the pursuit terminated. Moments later, the Altima crashed into multiple vehicles in the 5800 block of Vaughn Road near Young Meadows Road.
Willis Simmons, a passenger in the Altima, was trapped inside the wreckage and pronounced dead at the scene. The driver survived and was later charged in connection with the crash. Investigators reported recovering a rifle inside the vehicle and stated that marijuana was found in Simmons' pocket.
