OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/25/2022, Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office deputies and Woodstock Police Department officers responded to a report that Sean Christopher McCormick had been outside a neighbor's residence shining lights into the home, knocking on the door, and that multiple gunshots had been heard. Officers located McCormick at his residence on Copp Road, where additional gunfire was heard after their arrival. Police established a perimeter around the property and spent several minutes attempting to negotiate with McCormick in an effort to resolve the situation peacefully. During the standoff, McCormick moved between the inside and outside of the residence while officers continued communicating with him.
According to investigators, McCormick eventually exited the residence holding a firearm. Deputies and officers opened fire, striking him. Officers rendered medical aid at the scene before he was transported to Winchester Medical Center, where he died from his injuries. The Virginia State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation conducted the independent investigation at the request of local authorities. After reviewing the investigation, the Shenandoah County Commonwealth's Attorney determined that the use of deadly force did not warrant criminal charges. Approximately one month after the shooting, Sheriff Tim Carter publicly released body camera footage from three responding officers along with a statement explaining the findings of the investigation. The identities of the deputies who fired their weapons have not been publicly released.
