OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/25/2022, Auburn Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired at a residence on the 800 block of Griswold Court. As officers arrived, they observed a vehicle leaving the area and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle continued driving away, prompting a pursuit involving Auburn police, the DeKalb County Sheriff's Office, and the Indiana State Police. Officers deployed stop sticks on County Road 51 near State Road 8, flattening the vehicle's tires, but it continued northbound at a slow speed. As officers followed, they heard gunshots coming from inside the vehicle. When the vehicle stopped near the intersection of County Road 51 and County Road 40, officers found Heather Lynn Harmon, 35, in the driver's seat with a gunshot wound and Edward James Conboy, 37, in the rear seat with a fatal gunshot wound. Officers attempted lifesaving measures on Harmon, but she died at the scene. Investigators determined that no law enforcement officers fired their weapons during the incident.
The Indiana State Police investigation found that Conboy, who had previously been in a relationship with Harmon, forced his way into her vehicle at gunpoint outside the Griswold Court residence after firing shots during a struggle. Detectives concluded Harmon remained behind the wheel throughout the pursuit because she was acting under Conboy's coercion. At the end of the pursuit, Conboy fatally shot Harmon before taking his own life. Authorities classified the incident as a domestic violence-related murder-suicide. No officers have been identified because none discharged their weapons.
Heather Lynn Harmon was 35 years old and lived in Auburn. She was remembered by family and friends as a devoted mother of three children, a registered nurse, and a graduate of DeKalb High School. She had worked at Parkview DeKalb Hospital and was active in her community. Her death prompted an outpouring of support for her family.
