OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/23/2022, at approximately 8:20 a.m., a Jackson County Sheriff's Office deputy and Sneads Police Department Sergeant Brett Preston responded to a disturbance call at a residence in the 7600 block of McKeown Mill Road. Authorities have never publicly described the nature of the disturbance that prompted the response. When the deputy and Preston arrived, they encountered a 42-year-old man outside the residence. According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the man immediately opened fire on the responding officers. Sergeant Preston was struck by gunfire and seriously wounded.
Deputies and officers returned fire, striking the man multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Preston was transported to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds. His injuries were described as serious but not life-threatening, and he was later reported to be awake, alert, and recovering. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement assumed responsibility for investigating the shooting.
Sneads Police Chief Mike Miller later identified the wounded officer as Sergeant Brett Preston, a 16-year veteran of the department. Community fundraisers and donations were organized during his recovery. Despite the passage of several years, I found no public release identifying the deceased man, no publicly released FDLE investigative findings, no indication that the officers were criminally reviewed beyond the standard investigation, and no publicly reported civil lawsuit arising from the shooting.
