On 07/23/2022, shortly before 3:30 a.m., a Duquesne Police Department officer observed a black Cadillac Escalade traveling at a high rate of speed on Route 837 near Center Street. According to Allegheny County Police, the Escalade nearly collided head-on with the officer's patrol vehicle before striking another passenger vehicle and continuing without stopping. The officer initiated a pursuit but lost sight of the Escalade on Camp Hollow Road in West Mifflin.
A short time later, the Escalade approached the entrance to Allegheny County Airport, sped through a construction zone where it narrowly missed two flaggers, entered airport property, and the driver lost control. The SUV overturned violently, ejecting both occupants. Barbara Mohamed, 32, of Dravosburg, who was riding as a passenger, suffered critical injuries and was transported to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver survived with serious injuries and was hospitalized in stable condition.
Allegheny County Police Homicide detectives and Collision Reconstruction Unit investigators assumed responsibility for the investigation. Public reporting does not indicate that police vehicles made contact with the Escalade before the crash, and no officers discharged their weapons. I found no public release identifying the pursuing Duquesne officer, no publicly reported criminal charges related to the pursuit, and no civil lawsuit filed on behalf of Barbara Mohamed arising from the crash.

On 07/23/2022, shortly before 2:00 a.m., a Bedford Police Department officer attempted to stop Juan Mario Gonzalez after observing him speeding on State Highway 183 and suspecting he was driving while intoxicated. Gonzalez continued driving away while the officer pursued him eastbound into Dallas. During the pursuit, investigators said Gonzalez fired multiple shots from his vehicle at the pursuing officer. Additional officers from the Dallas Police Department and the Dallas County Sheriff's Office responded to assist.
The pursuit ended in the 2300 block of North Stemmons Freeway after Gonzalez stopped his vehicle and got out armed with a handgun. According to investigators, he again fired at officers. A Bedford police officer returned fire, striking Gonzalez. A passenger, Richard Nicholas Flores, surrendered and was arrested. Investigators later alleged that Flores had also fired at officers during the incident and charged him with aggravated assault on a public servant.
Gonzalez was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. During the exchange of gunfire, an uninvolved motorist sitting in a vehicle behind police was struck by a stray bullet and critically injured. The Dallas Police Department Special Investigations Unit and the Dallas County District Attorney's Office investigated the shooting. Despite later searches, I found no public release identifying the Bedford officer who fired the fatal shots, no publicly reported prosecutorial findings, and no publicly reported civil lawsuit filed by Gonzalez's family.

On July 23, deputies with the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office were serving warrants at a residence in eastern Douglas County for Marvin Burke, age 54 of Willow Springs, who had warrants for child molestation and attempted rape.
Deputies arrived at the residence and found Burke and another male subject sitting outside. Burke stood and began to walk away. Burke fled and allegedly turned and fired a gun at police who shot him multiple times, killing him.

According to the Jackson County Sheriff's Office, the man immediately opened fire on the responding officers. Sergeant Preston was struck by gunfire and seriously wounded.
Deputies and officers returned fire, striking the man multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Preston was transported to Tallahassee Memorial HealthCare, where he underwent surgery for gunshot wounds. As Officer Steele approached the vehicle in the 5311 block of Madison Road, Leonard Brewington awakened and drove a short distance before stopping. According to investigators, Brewington exited the vehicle and then reached back inside. Police stated he removed a handgun and pointed it toward Officer Steele. Steele fired five rounds, striking Brewington in the torso and groin. Officers rendered aid until Cincinnati Fire Department personnel arrived, but Brewington was pronounced dead at the scene. Duron, a Texas Department of Public Safety trooper identified publicly only as Hamid, and a Fort Bend County Sheriff's Office deputy located Bundrent in the backyard of a residence in the 15500 block of Winter Briar Drive. According to investigators, Bundrent again fired at officers as they entered the yard. The officers returned fire, striking him multiple times. Officers rendered first aid before he was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The Harris County medical examiner determined he died from multiple gunshot wounds to the neck, torso, arms, and legs.
The Houston Police Department Special Investigations Unit, Internal Affairs Division, and the Fort Bend County District Attorney's Office investigated the shooting. Houston Police publicly identified Officers J. Rodgers and M. Duron two days after the incident. Missouri City Officer Crystal Sepulveda was identified because she had been wounded during the pursuit. On 07/18/2022, law enforcement located Christopher David Price, who was wanted in connection with the July 15 fatal shooting of Erreese King Jr. at Harb’s Market in Knoxville. When officers attempted to take him into custody, Price ran into a residence in the Cedar Bluff area and barricaded himself. During the standoff with officers outside, he shot himself. Authorities confirmed he died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. The death occurred during the active police operation to arrest him.

North Las Vegas PD responded to a call alleging a shooting. When they arrived, they found the wife of Las Vegas officer Israel Molina and her son who had just escaped the home. Officer Israel Molina and his daughter Sofia were inside. Officer Molina shot and killed his 12-year-old daughter, then committed suicide as police approached. He had been a Las Vegas Metropolitan PD officer for 6 years.
