OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 07/23/2022, shortly before 8:00 a.m., Broward County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a domestic disturbance call at an apartment complex in the 1700 block of South State Road 7 in North Lauderdale. When deputies arrived, they encountered 28-year-old Mervel Jones Jr. outside the residence. According to the Broward Sheriff's Office, Jones produced a handgun and fired at the responding deputies. One deputy was grazed in the head by a bullet.
Deputies returned fire, striking Jones multiple times. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The wounded deputy was also taken to a hospital and was expected to recover from the graze wound. Sheriff Gregory Tony later stated that the deputy narrowly escaped a fatal injury.
The Broward Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit, Crime Scene Unit, and Internal Affairs responded to the scene, while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducted the independent investigation into the shooting. Despite later searches, I found no public release identifying the deputies who fired their weapons, no publicly released FDLE investigative findings, no announced prosecutorial review, and no publicly reported civil lawsuit filed by Jones's family arising from the shooting.
