On 07/23/2022, shortly before 3:00 p.m., Cincinnati Police Officer Genesis Steele responded to reports of a vehicle stopped in traffic at Madison Road and Whetsel Avenue with the driver appearing unconscious or "nodding off" behind the wheel. As Officer Steele approached the vehicle in the 5311 block of Madison Road, Leonard Brewington awakened and drove a short distance before stopping. According to investigators, Brewington exited the vehicle and then reached back inside. Police stated he removed a handgun and pointed it toward Officer Steele. Steele fired five rounds, striking Brewington in the torso and groin. Officers rendered aid until Cincinnati Fire Department personnel arrived, but Brewington was pronounced dead at the scene. Hamilton County Prosecutor Melissa Powers reviewed the investigation and announced in September 2022 that Officer Steele's use of deadly force was legally justified under Ohio law, concluding that she reasonably believed she faced an imminent threat of death or serious bodily harm. No criminal charges were filed against the officer.
Friends and relatives described Brewington as a kind and caring man who had struggled with addiction and substance use disorder for years. They said he had been trying to rebuild his life, maintained close relationships with family, and believed his death reflected the need for greater compassion and expanded access to addiction treatment. Community members held a vigil following the shooting to remember him and to call attention to the challenges faced by people living with addiction.
