Around 4:30 a.m. on 05/09/2023, a man driving a Ford Escape was fleeing from Amherst County Sheriff's Office deputies south on US-29 at a high rate of speed. The car suddenly veered off the road and crashed. When Amherst deputies checked the vehicle, they discovered that the driver was deceased and had suffered a gunshot wound. He is believed to have committed suicide under police duress.
