OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/07/2022, at approximately 4:00 a.m., a Garfield Heights police officer observed a gray 2018 Infiniti QX60 traveling at a high rate of speed on Turney Road without a license plate. Officers attempted a traffic stop, but the driver continued driving away and Garfield Heights police pursued the vehicle. Police later reported the Infiniti had been reported stolen.
Seconds after the pursuit began, the Infiniti crossed the center line near the intersection of Turney Road and Grand Division Avenue in Cleveland and collided with two vehicles. One of the vehicles, a 2009 Chevrolet Cobalt driven by 26-year-old Cameron Crews of Maple Heights, sustained catastrophic damage. Crews was transported to Marymount Hospital, where he died from his injuries. His passenger was transported to MetroHealth Medical Center with injuries.
The Infiniti driver left the crash scene on foot. Garfield Heights police recovered a firearm from inside the Infiniti and released surveillance video in an effort to identify the driver.
Cleveland Police Accident Investigation Unit and Garfield Heights Police investigated the fatal crash. On August 11, 2022, Garfield Heights Police released body-camera video showing officers arriving at the scene immediately after the collision and beginning their emergency response.
