Patrick Lyoya, a 26-year-old Congolese immigrant and father of two, was fatally shot by Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr during a traffic stop on April 4, 2022. The incident occurred after Lyoya was pulled over for improper license plates. Upon exiting his vehicle, Lyoya attempted to flee, leading to a physical struggle with Officer Schurr. During the altercation, Schurr's body camera was deactivated, but other footage captured the confrontation. Schurr claimed that Lyoya gained control of his Taser, prompting him to use lethal force. He shot Lyoya in the back of the head while Lyoya was facedown on the ground.
