On 08/05/2022, members of the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Fugitive and Missing Persons Task Force, including officers from the Greensboro Police Department and Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, located 31-year-old Alexander Dekontee Weah at the Speedway gas station at 2405 Lewisville-Clemmons Road in Clemmons. Officers were attempting to serve a Mecklenburg County murder warrant.
As officers approached Weah near the gas station, gunfire was exchanged between Weah and law enforcement. During the exchange, Greensboro Police Officer M.J. Ambrosio was struck by gunfire and suffered a non-life-threatening injury. Officers returned fire, striking Weah, who died at the scene.
The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation conducted the investigation into the shooting. The SBI identified Weah on August 8, 2022, and confirmed that four Greensboro Police officers and one Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer fired their weapons during the encounter. The investigation was submitted to the Forsyth County District Attorney for review.
In November 2022, Greensboro Police stated that the four Greensboro officers who discharged their weapons remained on administrative duty while the SBI investigation and prosecutorial review continued.
