OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/05/2022, members of the Adams County Sheriff's Office Special Enforcement Team, working with the Denver Police Department, located 31-year-old Ismael Aranda at the Aspen Park Apartments, 301 Malley Drive, in Northglenn. Officers were attempting to arrest Aranda on an active Denver warrant for attempted first-degree murder after locating him through cellphone tracking information.
Deputies established a perimeter around the apartment complex while Aranda remained inside with a woman and three children. After the woman left the apartment in a rideshare vehicle, deputies approached Aranda outside the building and ordered him to the ground. Aranda continued moving toward the rideshare vehicle and entered it. Deputies surrounded the vehicle as Aranda moved toward the front seat while holding a handgun. Deputies fired, striking Aranda. He was pronounced dead at the scene. One Adams County deputy sustained a minor injury during the encounter.
The 17th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team investigated the shooting. In March 2023, the Adams County District Attorney concluded that the deputies' use of deadly force was legally justified under Colorado law after reviewing the investigation.
