OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/04/2022, Klamath Falls Police Department officers responded to a reported domestic disturbance at a residence in the 3300 block of Bristol Avenue. When officers arrived, they encountered 29-year-old Mathew Wayne Vaughan outside the residence.
According to investigators, Vaughan was armed with a handgun. Officers gave commands for him to drop the weapon. Vaughan pointed the handgun toward officers, and two Klamath Falls police officers fired their service weapons, striking him. Officers provided medical aid until emergency medical personnel arrived, but Vaughan died at the scene.
The Oregon State Police led the investigation. The findings were presented to a Klamath County grand jury. On November 17, 2022, the grand jury concluded that the officers' use of deadly force was justified under Oregon law, and no criminal charges were filed.
