OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/03/2022, at approximately 5:06 a.m., Lake Wales Police Department officers responded to a domestic violence call near West Seminole Avenue. A woman reported that Earnest Borders had pulled her from a vehicle, choked her, struck her head on the pavement, and fired multiple rounds before leaving the area. Officers located spent shell casings and began searching for Borders.
Borders later returned to the area carrying a stolen handgun. When officers attempted to arrest him, he continued into a wooded area along nearby railroad tracks. Officer Jared Joyner deployed K-9 Max to apprehend Borders. Max located and bit Borders, who then shot and killed the police dog. Officers returned fire, striking Borders. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities stated that K-9 Max's actions likely prevented officers from being killed or seriously injured.
