OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/02/2022, Elmore County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to a residence on Cherokee Trail after a woman reported that one of her sons had shot another son. Earlier that day, deputies had responded to a domestic disturbance at the same property but left after family members advised that no services were needed. When deputies returned shortly before midnight, they heard someone yelling, "My brother is trying to kill me."
Deputies entered a workshop on the property and encountered 56-year-old Darrin Gray holding a handgun in one hand and a flashlight in the other. Deputies gave repeated commands for Gray to put the handgun down. According to the sheriff, Gray instead pointed the handgun toward the deputies. A supervisor and a deputy fired their service weapons, striking Gray. He was transported to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.
Deputies then located Gray's brother, Cecil Gray, inside a nearby residence suffering from a gunshot wound to the leg. Investigators reported that Darrin Gray had shot him before deputies arrived. The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency conducted the investigation into the shooting.
