OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 08/01/2022, at approximately 9:30 p.m., Gordon County Sheriff's Office undercover deputies conducted a narcotics operation near the intersection of Brookline Circle and Dews Pond Road in Calhoun. Deputies arranged to purchase methamphetamine and marijuana from two men. After completing the purchase, the deputies identified themselves as law enforcement officers and attempted to arrest the men.
According to investigators, Walter Lee Osborne Jr. was armed with a handgun and then produced a shortened AK-47-style rifle, threatening to shoot the deputies. Deputies fired their service weapons, striking Osborne. He died at the scene. The second man fled on foot and was not immediately apprehended. Investigators recovered two firearms and suspected illegal drugs from the scene.
The Georgia Bureau of Investigation conducted the independent investigation at the request of the Gordon County Sheriff's Office. Upon completion, the case was to be submitted to the Gordon County District Attorney's Office for review.
