On September 19, 2024, Polina Wright, 25, was shot and killed at her home in Ocala by her boyfriend, Marion County Sheriff's Deputy Leslie Boileau, during an incident while they were cleaning firearms. Boileau reported that the shooting was accidental, claiming the rifle discharged while they were handling it. Wright was shot in the forehead, and Boileau immediately contacted authorities.

Upon investigation, it was determined that Boileau was cleaning his rifle when the shot was fired. Boileau was arrested and charged with manslaughter, and he was dismissed from the Marion County Sheriff's Office after eight years of service.
