OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/23/2023, Glen Sprowl Jr., 53, of Stanton, was at Cook’s Corner when retired Ventura Police Department Sgt. John Snowling entered the bar and opened fire. Snowling initially targeted his estranged wife, Marie Snowling, shooting her in the jaw, and then shot her friend Tonya Clark. He subsequently fired at other patrons.

After the initial gunfire, Snowling left the bar and went to his silver pickup truck in the parking lot to obtain additional weapons. Snowling had initially entered with two handguns and retrieved another handgun and a 12-gauge shotgun from the truck.

Sprowl approached Snowling in the parking lot while Snowling was retrieving the additional firearms. Authorities identified Sprowl as the man who attempted to engage Snowling during the mass shooting. Snowling shot and killed Sprowl.

Sprowl had worked as a truck driver and bouncer. His uncle later confirmed that Sprowl was the person who approached Snowling as the retired officer returned to his vehicle for more weapons.

Snowling continued shooting before Orange County sheriff’s deputies arrived. He ultimately shot nine people, killing Sprowl, Tonya Clark and John Leehey and wounding six others.

Responding deputies encountered Snowling armed in the parking lot. Snowling fired at deputies and was subsequently killed by police gunfire.

The Orange County Sheriff’s Department Coroner Division identified Sprowl as one of the three people killed by Snowling.

OFFICER BACKGROUND:
John Patrick Snowling served with the Ventura Police Department from July 1986 until retiring as a sergeant in February 2014 after approximately 28 years. He had served in patrol and traffic assignments and as president of the Ventura Police Officers Association.

Snowling traveled from Ohio to Southern California amid an ongoing divorce from his wife, Marie. Investigators concluded that he went to Cook’s Corner targeting her.

Snowling brought multiple firearms to Cook’s Corner and retrieved additional weapons from his vehicle after beginning the shooting. Investigators recovered three handguns and a shotgun belonging to him.
