On September 28, 2024, Port St. Lucie Police responded to a domestic violence call at a residence on Northwest Marion Avenue. Upon arrival, they found 50-year-old Paul Simon Fialho with an open propane tank and a lighter, and his wife restrained with zip ties inside the home.

The officers attempted to engage with Fialho. ,When he continued to pose a perceived threat, officers fired on him, resulting in his death. The woman and three children inside the home were safely removed, and no one else was injured.

Fialho’s family has questioned whether the officers could have de-escalated the situation without resorting to lethal force, particularly given his mental health struggles and the presence of the children. The incident is being investigated by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement.
