On October 10, 2024, Hollywood Police Department officers responded to a reported dispute between neighbors over a damaged fence in the 6600 block of Eaton Street in Hollywood, Florida. Upon arrival, officers entered the home of 48-year-old Juan Wu without permission, according to his family. They demanded Wu produce identification, which he refused.

Wu's brother, who was present, tried to explain in Spanish that Wu was a Marine Corps veteran suffering from PTSD. The family also noted that no one in the home spoke English. Officers escalated the encounter by deploying a Taser on Wu, but when it failed to subdue him, an officer discharged their firearm, fatally striking him.
