On February 26, 2024, at approximately 7:50 a.m., Sarasota Police Department officers attempted to arrest 54-year-old William Michael Pickett, who was wanted for the robbery of a Fifth Third Bank. Pickett fled in his vehicle, and police escalated the chase that ended when Pickett's vehicle became submerged in a pond near University Parkway. Officers opened fire, resulting in Pickett's death. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating the incident. The names of the officers involved have not been disclosed, with police continuing to shield their identities.
