OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On October 18, 2024, Albuquerque Police officers shot and killed Matthew Garcia while he was handcuffed in the back of a police vehicle. The shooting took place during a code enforcement operation at the Tewa Motor Lodge. Garcia, who had concealed his identity, was discovered to have a firearm in his possession. Officers attempted to wrestle the firearm from him, resulting in shots being fired. The APD is investigating the incident to determine if the officers followed proper procedures during the encounter.
