Fernando Guerrero Esparza was fatally shot by an officer on October 17, 2024, after authorities responded to a report of a man with a knife in the 300 block of South San Gorgonio Avenue in Banning. Upon contact, Esparza reportedly charged at the officer while still armed with a knife. The officer responded by firing, and despite life-saving efforts, Esparza succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The Riverside County Sheriff's Office Force Investigations Detail is handling the investigation.
