The incident began when officers initiated a chase involving an unidentified individual who was fleeing law enforcement. The fleeing driver collided with a Chrysler Crossfire driven by James Michael Nelson, a 40-year-old man from Barnhart, Missouri.

Nelson's vehicle crossed into oncoming lanes and collided with a semi-truck. Nelson sustained critical injuries and was transported to Mercy Hospital Jefferson, where he was later pronounced deceased. The crash also resulted in injuries to Nelson's passenger, Michael W. Coleman, 40, of DeSoto, Missouri, who suffered moderate injuries. The semi-truck driver sustained injuries and received medical attention.
