OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 08/13/2024, Kansas City police attempted to stop a Kia Soul after determining it had been reported stolen. The reason for the pursuit was the stolen vehicle. The driver, 16-year-old Donelle Morris, continued driving away while police pursued through Kansas City streets. Police later stated the pursuit was terminated before the collision because of the danger created by the fleeing vehicle.
Shortly after the pursuit ended, the Kia entered the intersection of East 35th Street and Prospect Avenue at a high rate of speed and collided with another vehicle. The impact overturned the Kia and ejected multiple occupants. Driver Donelle Morris and front-seat passenger Reginald K. Smith died at the scene. Rear-seat passenger Myesha S. Gentry was transported to a hospital, where she later died from her injuries.
Five additional occupants of the Kia, including several children, were injured. Occupants of the other vehicle also suffered injuries but survived. The Kansas City Police Department Fatality Unit investigated the collision.
Subsequent reporting identified all three people who died in the crash. No publicly reported civil lawsuit, criminal charges against the pursuing officers, or disciplinary action arising from the pursuit had been announced through the latest available reporting.
