OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On 07/29/2024 at approximately 3:20 a.m., Los Angeles Police Department officers responded to a report of a burglary in progress in the 2600 block of South Halm Avenue. According to investigators, 31-year-old Lavell Adams attempted to break into one residence before entering a neighboring home occupied by an elderly woman, who fled the residence. A fire subsequently started inside the home, prompting a response from the Los Angeles Fire Department.
Firefighters entered the residence but encountered Adams holding a knife and withdrew. LAPD officers attempted to take Adams into custody, but investigators reported that Adams lunged toward officers while armed. An officer fired two beanbag rounds, after which Adams barricaded himself inside the residence. Metropolitan Division SWAT officers responded and established containment around the home.
According to the LAPD, Adams later exited through a side window covered with a blanket. SWAT officers repeatedly ordered him to show his hands, drop the blanket, and comply with commands. Investigators stated that Adams then revealed a large butcher knife and advanced toward the officers. Officer Timothy Jang fired his weapon while another officer simultaneously deployed a TASER. Adams was struck by gunfire, dropped the knife, and fell to the ground. Los Angeles Fire Department Tactical Emergency Medical Support personnel immediately evaluated him, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. No officers or bystanders were injured.
The LAPD Force Investigation Division is investigating the shooting, while Los Angeles Fire Department Arson investigators are conducting a separate investigation into the residential fire. On August 5, 2024, LAPD publicly identified the involved SWAT officer as Officer III Timothy Jang. As of the latest publicly available information, no final prosecutorial review or administrative finding has been released.
