On 06/28/2023, Maricopa police responded to reports of individuals breaking into vehicles near Honeycutt Road and Hartman Road on the Gila River Indian Reservation. A caller followed the group and provided updates. Officers confronted three individuals. During the encounter, a 17-year-old male fired a gun and struck Corporal J. Fox in the leg. Two officers returned fire and struck the teen. He died from gunshot wounds. Authorities arrested two other males, ages 17 and 20. The Federal Bureau of Investigation led the investigation because the shooting occurred on tribal land.
