Aurora police responded to a domestic violence call regarding a teenager who had severely beaten his mother. Roommates attempted to intervene, but Guillen allegedly threatened them with a gun. Upon arrival, police shot and killed him. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The family had been immigrants from Venezuela.

The investigation into the incident is being managed by the 18th Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT), which is tasked with reviewing officer-involved shootings in the area.
