In the case of Taylor Cotton, who was shot and killed by police, the incident occurred at the 1200 block of Rosedale Drive in Dayton, Ohio, on a Saturday morning. Police were responding to a mental health call from Cotton's mother, who had informed dispatchers that her son was having a mental health episode and had threatened her. Cotton allegedly a shotgun during the confrontation. Officers were informed by dispatch that the address had a history of mental health-related calls.

Upon arrival, officers encountered Cotton, who was seen with a shotgun. During a 30-minute standoff, Cotton reportedly exited his vehicle and allegedly pointed the shotgun at officers. In response, eight officers and deputies fired multiple shots, striking Cotton. It was later determined that the shotgun he had been seen with had not been loaded​.

Eight officers, including members from the Dayton Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff's Office, and Moraine Police Department participated in the shooting. Medical aid was reportedly rendered on the scene before he died from his injuries at a hospital.

As of now, the Montgomery County Coroner, Dr. Kent Harshbarger, confirmed the identity of Taylor Cotton. An autopsy report has not been released, but authorities have stated Cotton was pronounced dead at Miami Valley Hospital following the shooting on October 19, 2024. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed publicly​.
