OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :

On May 4, 2024, at approximately 7:45 p.m., officers from the Aurora Police Department responded to a report of gunfire in the 1400 block of Clinton Street. Upon arrival, they found a 29-year-old man with a nonfatal gunshot wound to his leg. The man identified 28-year-old Jose Luis Rodriguez-Balderrama as the shooter. Rodriguez-Balderrama fled the scene in a red Ford Mustang.
.
Officers located the vehicle and initiated a pursuit, but lost sight of it shortly afterward. The pursuit was discontinued. Moments later, Rodriguez-Balderrama returned to the scene. Officers approached him near the victim’s apartment, where he was armed with a handgun. Despite orders to show his hands, Rodriguez-Balderrama allegedly pointed the firearm at the officers. In response, two officers discharged their weapons, fatally striking him. A .40-caliber Glock handgun was recovered at the scene.
.
Rodriguez-Balderrama was transported to a local hospital and was later pronounced deceased. The officers involved were placed on paid administrative leave, in line with department policy. The 18th Judicial District's Critical Incident Response Team (CIRT) conducted an independent investigation into the incident. On September 30, 2024, CIRT concluded that the officers' actions were justified, as Rodriguez-Balderrama posed an imminent threat to the officers and the community.
