OPEN RECORDS SUMMARY :
On 02/06/2022, Monroe County deputies observed a Dodge Charger traveling about 102 mph on Interstate 75 and attempted a traffic stop. The driver continued driving and accelerated beyond 169 mph. Deputies lost sight of the vehicle due to speed. Minutes later a motorist reported a burning vehicle off the Exit 198 ramp, where deputies found the Charger crashed in a wooded area. Deputies from Monroe and Butts counties pulled two occupants from the vehicle before smoke and flames prevented further rescue. Four male occupants died at the scene. Investigators recovered three firearms and multiple credit cards from the vehicle. Authorities did not publicly identify the occupants, name the deputies involved, report any disciplinary action, or document civil litigation related to the incident. Four people died.
