On 08/03/2022, Joel Adames was standing on the sidewalk at the intersection of Sherman Avenue and West 207th Street in the Inwood neighborhood of Manhattan when a speeding BMW entered the intersection against a red light and struck a Subaru. The Subaru was forced onto the sidewalk, where it struck Adames and another pedestrian. Adames died at the scene.
Surveillance video later released by Streetsblog showed NYPD vehicles arriving approximately 10 seconds after the collision, raising questions about whether the BMW had been involved in a police pursuit. The NYPD stated that the BMW was not being pursued and said a marked patrol vehicle was already stopped at the intersection when the crash occurred, accounting for the rapid response.
In October 2022, Manhattan prosecutors charged BMW driver Leandro Diaz-Ramirez with manslaughter and related offenses in connection with the deaths of Adames and David Fernandez.
